Our lucerne pellets and chopped lucerne are the ideal roughage supplement to supply your horses with the high-quality proteins, amino acids, minerals and trace elements from lucerne in a balanced way.
Lucerne is not wrongly referred to as the "queen of forage plants". It is a record-breaking plant in many respects: with its roots up to 5 metres long, it is able to form nitrogen and produce the highest quality protein from it.
Proteins are macromolecules made up of individual amino acids. They are essential for a healthy body in sufficient and good quality. All tissues and cells are made of proteins: Organs, fur, hooves, muscles, tendons and enzymes, hormones and antibodies, even the immune system consists almost entirely of protein.
Since the essential amino acids cannot be produced by the body itself, the absorption of all amino acids is particularly important. If even a single amino acid is not supplied sufficiently, it becomes a limiting amino acid. Protein synthesis in the liver can no longer take place and the excess protein is not utilized. This leads to strain on the intestines, liver and kidneys. Thus, it is not the amount of protein but rather the quality that is decisive. Lucerne has a lot of lysine as leguminose (lysine is usually the first limiting amino acid in horses) and sainfoin is even better in its protein composition.
Due to its high amino acid content and favourable amino acid ratio, feeding lucerne is an optimal way of preventing protein deficiency and compensating for deficits in hay. A lack of proteins or amino acids in the horse's body can lead to emaciation, lack of muscling, skin and fur diseases, immune system weaknesses and an increased risk of allergies. The high crude fibre content also stimulates the horse's colon flora. Especially the Semhof alfalfa with its low total sugar content makes the difference, because it provides not only high-quality amino acids but also an extremely metabolism-friendly feed... the liver is also happy about this... alfalfa is particularly rich in addition to its valuable proteins and essential amino acids:
